This is mostly because humans of lesser intelligence or high Machiavellianism lead to every aspect of religion. The origins of religious rituals come from humans' hyperactive agency detectors. These agency detectors generally get associated with dead relatives, and rituals associated with it become cultural. The high-Mach individuals of the society then hijack the rituals in a manner that benefits them socially or economically. You wind up with clear power hierarchies in all major religious institutions for this reason.
The only way for there to be no religion is if there were fewer of these idiot sheep (the vast majority of religious followers) and fewer of these manipulative figureheads. Instead, society would be full of smart people cooperating and working together.

Of course I have a massive bias against Japan. Their country's flag is literally a stoplight, they openly profess racism.
