Iโ€™ve worked in this field since the 90s and itโ€™s laughable to see many of the people get IT jobs protecting sensitive information that have no fucking clue what theyโ€™re doing.

It'll be some hairbrained scheme just complicated enough to obscure that it was encrypted with a master password.

The scheme will be just complicaed enough to obscure it and the developer will be held responsible for the leak You can't squeeze blood from a rock. All that will happen is firing. That is if the developer was stupid enough not to switch jobs every few years to avoid responsibility for shit they are forced to create..

Of course if they didn't deliver this insecure setup they'd have been shitcanned. They probably complained loudly but gave up when it became clear that it could only hurt them.

This would be quite a large file. I generated a word list once with 1 billion line items counting from one to 1 billion to hack old AT&T routers and the file was 46GB. This breach, if real, would be well over 1TB of raw text data.

Companies do not care about your data at all. Things that used to sound like end-of-the-world data breaches are now weekly occurrences and arenโ€™t covered in the news outside of tech media. Remember when we were told to NEVER EVER EVER SO MUCH AS CONSIDER giving out our social security number unless ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY and then every single on was leaked? A tens-of-millions password leak occurs once a month at this point

I just realized I have never synced any info with my google account and all of my passwords are stored locally in Firefox and Chrome along with having exported files in my external HDD.
Thank fuck for my disdain for giving any more info to these systems than required.
Basically nothing is connected, so these leaks can at worst affect one thing at a time.
No singular failure point.

The story isn't about any specific data breach, it's basically just a big advert for switching to passkey systems instead of existing password/multi-factor-authentication setups. If you're concerned, you can try one of the common checker sites like haveibeenpwned or the password manager tools on whatever browser or OS you're using to see if any of your emails or accounts have compromised in past breaches.

You should be changing passwords regularly (recommendation is 3-6 months), avoiding common password/login combos between sites, and adopting MFA setups for anything sensitive, but if you're asking if your current accounts have been breached recently the answer is probably 'no'.

If it get released, which it might not, but if it did it will probably be on the dark web. You will need to get on Tor. Start with tor browser. Then youโ€™re going to have to search through the dark web and hope you stumble upon it, because I doubt they are going to publicly announce where they are hosting the passwords

More than likely they will keep them private and offer to sell them to other bad actors for crypto. Or it was a foreign government that will keep for their own purposes.

>Is there a single fucking company that can keep data secure?
The answer is "no" and it's well known across the industry. Imposing any sort of reasonable accountability, or obeying existing laws, would greatly hinder the tech industry's "growth" (Uber flouting taxi laws, Facebook flouting privacy laws and coopearting with foreign governments, everyone leaking everyones data).
The basic expectations of these platforms can't be met but all legislation proposals point to assraping the user's privacy further, take the hint
