It's pretty simple.
The main reason for the schism between Sunni and Shiia islam is right of succession.
After Muhammad's death, his close friend and follower Abu Bakir became Caliph. The circumstances of this are where they divide.
Sunni's attest that Muhammad named no successors and respected their tribal electoral college like democracy, electing Bakir.
Muhammad's death to poisoning was attributed to a situation 3 years earlier where he was under the asylum of jews, they do in fact believe Muhammad staved off poisoning for 3 years until his death.
Fatima dies shortly after, purely of a broken heart because women are weak of will.
Shiia however, proclaim that Muhammad named his Son-in-law, Ali, as his successor upon his death. They claim that Abu Bakir and a mass of pissed off followers from Muhammad's tribe basically did a coup that resulted in Fatima's death when they sacked Ali's residence.
You know Aisha? Muhammad's 9 year old wife? That's Abu's daughter and the Shiia claim she served as a spy and assassin, feeding an early version of the Quran to sheep and poisoning Muhammad.
What the Shiia claim is a very particular series of rational explanations for circumstances that seem to fall in line with basic political conflict. He built an empire and his close friends were mad they weren't a part of it and the years of islamic inter-fighting and their entire culture of "always challenging the man in charge" shows this. They are just like that, never satisfied with leadership even when that leadership brings good times.
The Sunni hand wave away with low IQ mysticism.
Any outsider reading the difference will clearly see something reeks of political conspiracy especially with how poorly the Sunni cope about it.
