Prior to the 20th century, it wasn’t even really universal in the Middle East. It is technically a requirement of most sects of Islam, but Islam is notorious for a great level of theological variance across regions.

It was practically unheard of outside the Levant for all of human history.

Trans people don't really exist today, they are just shoved to the forefront of media as a demoralization tactic. They didn't really exist in the past beyond the sort of prison-rape victim archetype; i.e most were slaves that were forcefully raped into accepting their role as a homosexual passive. Female to male has some historical examples in all but name, but those examples are very dissimilar in motive and conduct from today so again no real presence.

If I may, crossdressing is "wearing the other's sex/gender clothing".
It was used a lot in arts for example in the olden times.
Also, the basic crossdresser knows he is a man, but just want to feel like a woman for some time. He is not a tranny that believes he is a woman.
The difference?
The real crossdresser is sex driven. It's a paraphilia, and thus the person lives a normal day to day live in it's correct gender according to it's sex.
Crossdresser were 99% of the time, men wearing women clothing.
So, crossdresser and tranny are not the same thing.
