I think the point is either she continued to make bad decisions after Forrest knocked her up that lead to HIV or Forrest fucked her when she was already pozzed which fits more in line with how AIDs works given the time frame.

Based on the timeline, it seemed her lifestyle would have been more likely to contract it before she had sex with him. And before she was pregnant. But that introduces a whole host of other questions. So, did she contract it after her son was born? Wasn't that the point where she turned her life around, thus making those chances pretty much impossible? And even taking the timing out of the equation, how did Forrest never contract it? If the ending of the movie was set before AIDS was fully understood (presumably even before it was GRIDS), then it wasn't understood how it was contracted fully. So using condoms with Forrest wouldn't even be on her radar. They just never had sex again then? This shit always bothered me.

Same here. Yes, with today's medications it can be made virtually impossible to contract it. But the 0.4% chance before it was called GRIDS was much higher.
