There’s no way one president in one term would ever be able to put a dent in it because there are too many long term financial instruments in play that need to be paid out over time or bought out which then need to be subsequently financed with further debt. Cuts to government spending are a start but are not even close to enough.
There’s a small part of me that thinks that the current administration equated the budget deficit with the trade deficit, which many lay people tend to do, which is why he went so hard at it, but I still think that would be too dumb even for him.
