It all depends really. Mostly what people do is just look at what they can afford to pay per month and make the call. Some are delusional some are reasonable about it. Can I afford $1000 a month house payment? Can I afford the car payment etc.

There is nothing wrong with financing a home if you can make the payments. The car thing is a bit more tricky because they depreciate so badly and modern vehicles the world over are absolute junk. So yeah it is stupid to go into too much debt over a car. But a modest car payment might be worth it depending on how much it is.

Alot of people arent good with cars and dont know how to buy a used one though and dont want to take the gamble so they just get in this mode of buying new. If you buy the right vehicle for about 20k though and it is an old enough model you can have a good vehicle that will last you a long long time if you are somewhat competent with doing some of your own repairs and maintenance and diagnosing problems etc. But few are cable of doing it these days.
