There isn't anything to explain. America is an oligarchy that serves wealthy special interests before anything else. The country is not nearly as divided as the pundits would have you believe. There is an apathetic voter base that could do a course correction at any time but usually they are so indifferent that they dont feel compelled to.

Republicans win elections using the one two punch of rallying their base and convincing fence sitters not to vote because fence sitters tend to vote Democrat.
