It's not really about having some magical connection with them. It just so happens that human psyche and pretty much anything else in the planet follows set developmental and behavioral patterns, and these patterns somehow seem to match the ones celestial bodies follow in some capacity.

So it's not really about planets controlling us, it's more about celestial dynamics being a metric system that can be used to "divine" human affairs because both follow the same movements in different scales and in a cyclical fashion.
