Its set in the near future, the world is a technological paradise, population 500 million or so, gmo food that grows like weeds everywhere, people can body mod themselves into anything they want, elves, orcs, animals even, all controlled by a god like AI called Mother. Then rogues members of the worldwide governing council deactivate the AI because they feel it stagnates humanity, which kicks off a civil war, hence the series' name. Theres a part where, in preparation for battle the hero character carries out a bizarre satanic ritual. Its like the whole subtext of the book is a world where the NWO won. He doesnt harp on it but its a really interesting approach.
