Horses are a domestic animal, the now extinct wild animal that we domesticated them from looked and lived very differently to the way that modern horses do. "Wild horses" in the modern day are populations of feral horses descended from domestic ones that escaped captivity, and unlike the romanticized image of them in our cultures about your mustangs and our brumbies, they tend to live short and uncomfortable lives. The brumbies we caught when i was a kid were usually fucked up with messed up feet, diseases, and in quite a bit of pain. You can release a herd of cattle into the wilderness, they might survive depending on the wilderness but that wont magically make them tun back into the Eurasian aurochs we domesticated them from. To be kept healthy and in a state fit for any sort of working use horses require a lot of care, money, and attention from someone knowledgeable in their care.
