I don't buy that, most south slavs were united for hundreds of years (under Ottoman rule) and the differences between them never melted away. Also, you have to realize that Tito kept the constituent nations in line with brutal policing, censorship, and a high degree of political centralization. He also played the divide and conquer game by inventing new identities and polities to ensure a delicate balance of power on the federal level (I'm referring to Montenegro, Vojvodina, and Kosovo being split from Serbia, AFAIK he also planned to divide Bulgaria into several political units had it entered the federation). All of this is quite telling of the fact that Yugoslavia's unity was tenuous even with minimal foreign interference.
