Iran is historically not an Islamic theocracy, that's the last few decades in their many thousand year history.
People don't like it when they go from being a relatively normal country to suddenly being run by religious zealots, from a religion most of the country don't even adhere to, inflicting idiotic rules upon them like 'all music and musical instruments are banned, you're only allowed to make vocal music praising Allah'.
Right now Iran has a huge amount of young people too (60% under 30), who overwhelmingly hate the regime. You would hate it too if you lived there instead of living in a cozy 1st world country which you would never, in a million years, give up to go live in a place like Iran.
