Trump was tricked into attacking Iran. For years, Israel has been looking for an opportunity to attack Iran and degrade their missile and nuclear capability. The October 7, 2023 Hamas attack on Israel, allowed Israel to first degrade Hamas's missile launching capability, and then Israel took out Hezbollah's missile launching capability.
Now with Hamas and Hezbollah out of the way, the time was right for Israel to attack Iran, they just needed a pretext, so it wouldn't look like Israel was the aggressor. That opportunity came when Trump's letter to Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei included a two-month deadline for reaching a new nuclear deal. Like much of what Trump says, he didn't really mean a two-month deadline, this was a threat to prompt action. We know Trump didn't mean it because he had negations scheduled with Iran on day 63, but Israel took the 60 day deadline to outmaneuver Trump and use his deadline as their pretext to attack, which they did on day 61.
Trump had to save face, since he did set the unintentional deadline, and he doubled down by conducting his own attack on Iran's nuclear sites. This is not what Trump intended, he wanted a new nuclear deal, but his own rhetoric was used by Netanyahu to outmaneuver Trump.
