if the religious leaders of Iran are as stupid and blinded by religion as you say, they would never have made it this far and would have disastrously screwed up one of the other cuban missile crisis tier scenarios the country has gone through over the past 50 years. They historically seem very cautious to avoid war with the US. Even with Israel attacking them recently, it was only on the 3rd time that they really started fighting back.

I think they are indeed super religious but at the same time they understand they have to make compromises sometimes to run a country.
The idea they'd randomly start a nuclear war is just an excuse, complete with fearmongering.
The real reason for this war is to prevent them from becoming a stone wall that we can't take down anymore. This is the last chance before they become invincible by having nukes. But that doesn't sound as good as saying they'll nuke the world.
