The first step is to die.
We bury you alive in a box with water but no food for what we tell you is only 24 hours.
But it's actually 3 days. 24 hours is enough to scare you but not enough to break your mind. You quickly lose track of time when in total darkness and claustrophobia, but even in that state you still think you can just hold out.
When 24 hours comes and goes your brain really loses it. You will claw at the box and rip your fingernails off and grind down your fingers to raw meat, then you will go near catatonic and hyperventilate as the terror of your situation sets in. 40 hours in you are solidly locked into a hallucination, and you probably believe you are dead already.
Ego death happens around day 2. The death if yourself and whatever you were before. You've shit and pissed yourself already, but you don't care. Your brain is already something other than human by now. Day 3 you achieve a form of inner peace. You don't fear death or anything anymore because you have already died.
Beyond this you would forget to drink water and just die, so we don't push it further. At the end of day 3 we dig you out. Sometimes they try to fight instantly, but lack energy. Most of the time they just lay there uncomprehending. They thought they were left for dead.
Realization dawns as they are lifted out of the mock grave and they realize they are alive. How wonderful it is to be alive and not imprisoned. They can't really form tears due to dehydration, but it's always an emotional breakdown.
Nobody is ever the same after being buried. It's one of the only forced mental resets that can be done to a man. He almost never falls back into his old shitty habits because he is not the same person anymore. Dying changes everything.
