Maybe he was trying to defeat the Russians so that he could ultimately expel the Jews from a Nazi occupied Russia. And he just didn't mind killing footsoldiers as a necessary Evil. You're just listing the direct examples. Almost all movies are just the WW2 narrative in different settings. The bad guys in Harry Potter are wizard nazis. The bad guys in Star Wars are space nazis. The bad guys in skyrim are elf nazis. There is literally only one narrative in all of popular fiction, just reskinned for different settings.
