Checking in from Dunedin. My take is this, can have a really nice life here if you are smart. Cost have living has crept up, true and job market has shrunk recently - mainly due to recession and a lot of government redundancies. Mass exodus of skilled talent to Australia at the moment. This will swing back in 6-12 months with more opportunities. Depending on what you do for a living the larger cities may be a better option, Dunedin where I live is the 7th largest city in NZ at ~140k people - mainly white Scot/Anglo/Irish. Smaller populations make it harder to find work if you are specialised or working at a very high level - I myself find it easier to work remotely for US companies.
Life style is great, fish and chips down here are fantastic (blue cod) - I do miss North Island potato fritters and snapper though.
Pajeet population is growing, and Dunedin is a University city - take that to mean quite liberal leaning in a shit way. Also quite a large American expat community - mainly attached to the university.
