To emphasize this-- I took a long road trip across the US, explicitly avoiding cities (and using census data to avoid non-white areas). Found some real lovely places. Real regional American culture. My favorite spots were in the Appalachians in West Virginia because nature is beautiful and they had good food, and in the deep Louisiana South because also good food but honestly just talking to people is great. that's weird i was just reading some old sci-fi from the very beginning of the computer age (true names by vernor vinge, 1979) and daydreamed a bit about tech trees that weren't monetized social media smartphone advertising surveillance slop

what i came up with off the top of my head was something like a retro handheld with keyboard and directional pads but also a touchscreen, that could be used to call, text, access apps, but also was hooked up to a local/civic network (like facebook, twitter, etc but not shitty, and publicly/cooperatively owned like a public utility, not a privately held for-profit business) with a visual UI like second life/the metaverse sorta

i think the only way we can defeat the evil big tech megacorps (who are all just skinsuits for the CIA anyway) is by creating a better version of what they do, which is publicly held, and uses tech in ways that benefit people instead of extracting value from them, hypnotizing them, manipulating them, surveilling them etc

the vision that came to me was a virtual 3D castle or cathedral, where each brick represented an action done by a member of the community, and where you could do stuff like vote in referendums, sign up for/document volunteering, participate in public feedback sessions, video conference etc, or also stuff like a dating app that instead of tinder-style soft eugenics actually matched people based on their personalities and incentivized deep connection instead of extractive meaningless sex,

most importantly i think is, if all the money isn't going to evil zuckerberg thiel sequoia capital investor types, it could go to the communities, both paying users for their time and effort (maybe in a community currency) but also devoting money to the shared goals in the community, like a public works administration where people vote on what the money should go to (and then get paid for helping out with projects via grants)

I figured it out in elementary school, and kept the habit of skipping almost every day, when I expected a test, of course instead of learning, wasted my time doing vidya, and that was kind of bad idea.

Those old timey phones weren't that great (middle button broke on my Sony Erickson), it's just the 3310 was very durable, and the Razor looked cool. Pens and erasers are not generation specific.
