Shingles are more affordable than tiles. They actually last a reasonable life span and do a good job at sealing as long as they are installed correctly. This gives people without tons of money an option to have a roof over their head. I don't see what the problem is here. You want it to be illegal for people to be able to build a house that's anything less than a true mansion?

It's the same reason plywood and 2x4's are available- it's affordable, and allows people to have a house. 2 foot thick medieval castle stones are expensive and difficult to come by.

Capitalism has created the system.
If you want to see what a world where the government uses the money capitalism can make, look at China, and how incredible their infrastructure projects are. If you want to see how capitalism can be used to make a tiny percentage incredibly rich and spunk loads on the military, whilst letting your country's infrastructure rot and crumble, check out the USA(!).

It probably depends on the climate. There are better options available if you want to pay for them. Its expensive to upgrade to concrete tiles, plus the roof needs to be built strong enough to hold the extra weight. The sky's the limit to what your building options are here in the USA.

Yes. The only concrete in most American homes is the foundation and maybe the floor. Brick homes are dying out and I don't think I've ever seen a home with metal beams. It's all mass produced, cheap, cookie-cutter housing which means you get solid wood beams, particle-board walls, plastic plumbing, and cancer-inducing insulation. If your house has a basement then there's concrete or cinder blocks and metal reinforcement beams/rebar. Usually just concrete blocks so in areas where the ground freezes then defrosts, it slowly damages the foundation. One of the houses I lived had in the walls separating from the floor due to flooded, wet land causing the foundation to shift. Before my family moved you could get your foot stuck in the gap that ran along the entire ground floor on one side of the house.

Older shingles used white asphalt because they were from when products were made to last, not replace. I used to work roofing, the white gravel drove me insane. Even in OP pic you can see the white rocks. It's so fucking spooky replacing shingles on roofs with high-grades. If you don't have something to brace against, you're just going to slide off once the rocks get moving.
Where I'm at now, on top of having black fucking shingles some genius decided to run the internet cables on the fucking roof so now the black cables, surrounded by black shingles, are connected to metal gutters and they cables are melting because I live in a shrubland/desert. I have no idea why they didn't use any conduit to protect the wires or bury the lines. It's the dumbest shit I've ever seen.

>i believe outside of OSHA americans have zero to no standards.

OSHA exists to strangle the small businesses, its so overcomplicated only the economy of scale can afford to work at all.

Besides that they have a bunch of codes that prohibit you from fixing your own wires and plumbing to protect the plumber and electrician unions, and they also have an insanely complicated system of certification to make sure there are always very few electricians, doctors and dentists to keep their work in high demand.
In Europe an electrician is a low end tradesman who puts the wire in the wall.
In America an electrician is the prestigious wire lawyer.>>508433045

>>508435679
Depends on the structure use but it's for sure cheaper. Moisture trapping is a problem in this case too, which can degrade the roof causing corrosion. Plus metal roofs are heavier and some structures should have the old roof removed since it can cause other problems due to the weight.

It's really about choosing the right tool for the job.

Even if you go into nice homes in DC/NW Virginia built in the past 5 years everything is cheap material and all interior (and I mean everything) is made in China tier.
Downtown buildings are even worse in every city because their cheap materials are cheap materials from the 50s or 60s. Shittiest hotels Ive been in were in US cities and they were still expensive.

roofing sdoes depend on the location
i live in Vancouver, it's a temperate rainforest and terracotta shouild be good with all that rain, but
1. it does not fit aesthetically in Canada, we don't have any Mediterranean history and we don't build in that style. there are some houses like that with the predicatable palms flanking the house, but they look foreign and out of place
2. we have a lot of huge trees, big tall trees and in spring windstorms some fall over and many more lose branches.
big branches, falling from height, fuck up teracotta roofing pretty badly

two reasons we don't use that here
mostly asphalt shingles or cedar shakes
people don't really want to put a metal roof on a 100-year-old house

You can buy a roof that will outlast the building, it's just expensive.
It's like why an oil refinery buys and installs pipes that will wear out in 30 years, rather than one that will last 90+. They are 40% more expensive.
For most people paying 10% more for a house with a roof that will never fail is not worth the savings over the 25-35 year of the cheaper roof.

And for most people they are correct and will have much more money after the roof wears out, both in absolute and relative terms.

>last for the life of the building
Gee. I wonder why the part of a building that takes the most wear and tear from sun and weather whos job it is to protect the rest of the stucture from the elements shielding and redirecting where possible doesn't last as long as the interior stucture can. Next you'll tell me you have to replace your clapboards/siding sometimes too. Now I don't much care for architectural shingles but even copper or slate roofs are going to need fixing eventually. Buildings require upkeep and maintenance, that's just a reality, and no exterior component is going to last forever if it's not being maintained, patched, and/or repaired as needed. Asphalt singles are a more affordable option than more long term roofing materials and don't require much skill to install. The trade off to that accessibility and affordability is a shorter lifespan.

American Shingles are relatively cheap, lightweight and easy to work with. All this talk about clay shingles are heavy and energy intensive to produce since ceramics need to be FIRED. Along with the fact the shingles last 15 to 20 years and are easy to drag up on to a roof and replace, much less drag OFF the roof. All your roof's are over engineered. If you overpayed and got ripped off on your USA shingle roof then thats on you. The fact these roof's are so cheap means theres the possibility of bending someone over and fucking their asses raw financially to replace their roof and pocket your steep mark up for "skilled" labor.

just ask AI for scientific consensus on best building material for your specific climate.
here its granite for building, and slate for roof

for roofs in nordics:

"Slate demonstrates remarkable longevity, with properly installed slate roofs lasting 75-200 years or more . Its ultra-low water absorption rate (less than 0.4%) and natural resistance to freeze-thaw cycles make it particularly suitable for Nordic conditions ."
--

for buildings in nordics
"Traditional masonry construction using natural stone offers unparalleled longevity compared to modern alternatives "

"Natural Stone: The Ultimate Long-Term Solution
Granite - The Premier Choice
Granite emerges as the most durable building material for extreme longevity . This igneous rock offers exceptional properties for Nordic climates:

Freeze-thaw resistance: Granite's dense structure and low water absorption rate (typically less than 0.5%) make it virtually immune to frost damage

Durability span: Granite can withstand some of the harshest environments with relatively little upkeep for centuries

Temperature stability: It resists expansion and contraction during extreme temperature variations, minimizing cracking risks "

A roof material that will add a total of 10,000kg to the structure means you don't need to build the whole building to support 70,000kg on the top. Even without a safety factor you might not want to build to to accommodate any and everything you could put on a roof.

Architectural metal shingles. They are a metal roof coated with the tar and stone of an asphalt shingle. Supposed to last 100 years + without any issues. I'm planning on doing it for my house sometime in the next 10 years. It's like 3 times the cost of traditional, but once it's done, the company covers it against all damage for 60 years. It's not a matter of lasting or not, it's a matter of wasteful overbuilding.
Once a roof is able to support the weight of a human walking around on top of it, and the weather protective layer you don't need to build the whole structure to accommodate extra weight that should never be put on top of it.

It would be like saying your 2 story house can't support the weight of 6 more floors built on top. Why don't you build things to last?
~
If you want a longer lasting roof you can have one it just costs a lot more. As I said in my first post, it makes more sense for most people to replace a roof shingle after 35 years than to build with a 200+ year material the first time.
Trying to get a cheaper longer lasting roof by building a structure that's able to support a heavy roofing material likely isn't saving any money.

It's alright and undeniably a step up from asphalt but "tin roofs" are very rarely actually made from tin. Lead, aluminum, and even layers of steel that will eventually rust is what you're actually getting. Metal roofing materials are great do last a long time, god send for preservation of old colonial homes, but it's just the cheaper alternative to cooper and still a compromise for price. I say of you're going to pay a premium price for metal roofing you should just go all in and spring for copper at that point. Plus the patena they devlop over time is gorgeous.

I'm sure you can, but why would you want to mix roof styles?
Aunt and Uncle got solar on their tiled roof a few years ago and had a problem with leaks for a year, but their house has historic French ceramic tiles that it was hard to source replacements for.
In the early days of the colony, ships from Britain would load up with the roof tiles as ballast for the voyage down here because there was a shortage of roofing materials until slate was discovered. For the voyage back they'd load up grain as ballast.
One of our neighbours has modern concrete tiles and had a dirty big solar system installed last year and they haven't had any issues with leaks.

Yeah we don't do the burger style of laying down plywood, it's just battens across the rafters and then lay the tiles or screw down the tin, but these days there's a layer of insulation between the battens and the roof cover, which deadens the rain sound quite a bit compared to the house I grew up in.

"Tin" hasn't been actual tin for well over a century. Tin here just means thin sheet metal (steel). Big brand here is "Colorbond" and we use it for everything: roof, cladding, flashings, gutters, downpipes, fences. It's cold-rolled high-tensile steel sheet with several layers of coatings on it to prevent corrosion. Stuff lasts for decades.

That's the thing with the fiberglass/asphalt shingles. They are very low maintenance. You don't have to fuck with them ever. If you are unlucky, once in your lifetime a strong enough wind will come along and blow over some trees, take off some of your siding, and take off some of your shingles. If that happens, you can just replace the missing shingles. But that almost never happens, and you won't have to touch your roof until it's time for new shingles, which could be after 30 years, but it'll probably be after 40 or 50 years. I'm going to point out that for a certain thickness and weight plywood is actually stronger than hardwood, for a certain thickness and weight wood is stronger than concrete and actually has tensile strength, I could go on but you get the picture. Do you want brick with mild-steel structural members, if so buy any pre-1930 building in a small Pennsylvanian town. Do you want full timber structural members like a barn? Do you want modern steel I beams with steel siding and roof, those are actually cheap to make and completely modular as well as more resistant than brick or timber. The US also has more tornadoes and wind storms(25mph+ gusts) than the rest of the world combined, there is a reason why nobody here is emotionally attached to buildings, and it ain't kikes.

How does it handle heavy hail after sitting outside of a few decades?
Asphalt has enough flex and is supported by a wood backing that that it doesn't get damaged by hail. Large areas of North America will get dangerous level of hail about once a decade.

I had three different roofing companies work on my roof.

First, it was a company from Ecuador, recommended by a friend.
Second, a group of Mexicans and Guatemalans from Inca Roofing or something like that.
Third, a mostly white company with mostly white men and four ownersβ€”three white, one Latino, and one white kid who I guess is the owner's son.

They all did a bad job, and the roof still leaks. but the worse thing was the white company who i thought for sure would fix it this time was x4 the cost.

in the end i had to replace the 1/5 of the roof with new wood

I had a similar experience. The problem was the first crew of illegals fucked up the job so much that nobody knew what to do. They had covered their problem. It was actually a little irish dude drug addict that this huge intrastate business sent to my house that finally discovered the problem. Then it was all apologies and the lead engineer and owner apologizing, wondering why the guy from Chile they'd been training for 10 years was still fucking up entire jobs

It's because that's shitty exposed fasteners R-panel. Spoiler alert, the EPDM grommets on those screws have the same life span as asphalt shingles, and you can only screw the panel approximately twice to replace worn grommets. The only metal roof worth a fuck is mechanical or snap lock standing seam.
>>508438822
These rubber shingles are cool, but they have the same problem that all EPDM has. The chemicals that polymerize the monomer chains evaporate over time and they will 100% shrink and crack. All you retards that think every house can have tile are dead wrong because your truss system has to have the correct width and spans to accommodate the dead load of the tiles and potential snow loads? Do any of you fags into ICC?

You didnt detail the problem found so. starter strip not staggered from the leading rows seem. brads not placed in the nail zone of the shingle. brads over penetrated and under penetrated. Giant fucking framing brads just shot through the shingle at 5PSI for whatever fucking reason. Not properly engineered for a slope that crashes into a wall. When it was not engineered correctly the roofers did not properly flash it to mitigate this..Almost all these problems could have been hidden by a $130 roll of ice and water shield they couldnt be fucked with...So you bet your ass I just climbed up there alone and reroofed it myself.
