it makes a lot of sense when you just zoom out for a moment. iran doesnt really care about china as theres no real connection between the two countries, military etc. whereas iran has to balance al ot of political factions from saudis to lebanese, israelis etc. china is very awkward when it comes to politics and usually just debt traps countries with no actual benefit to other party. so trump uses muscle to put iran into position to talk, they talk and iran blocks the straits crippling chinese trade, gets a few shots at israel, and usa doesnt escalate further. everyone walks away with something.
