I don't think Iran has any leverage here, or anything much to offer Putin.

That schizo copy pasta about Iran attacking all the oil wells and refineries in the middle east seems like the only viable escalation route here, because it's something Iran can do by itself.

Not that they would help in the slightest against F-35s or B-2s or be capable of setting them up without them being bombed first.

Iran itself didn't fight for Assad for unknown reasons. Russia wasn't even a secondary force in that conflict, but third after the Syrian army and Iran/its allied militias and had very little ground presence there. Russia is extremely unlikely to act as Syria's ground army even if/without the Ukraine war.

The Syrian army itself being tired, demoralized and many commanders being open to defection didn't surprise me, but Iran not sending its militias or directly getting involved itself did. That action didn't even require that much effort from them.

Didn't Russia just claim that they're keeping the entire western military complex occupied in Ukraine? What more can Iran possibly demand?

> Russia wasn't even a secondary force in that conflict,

I'm pretty sure it was only Russian warplanes bombing ISIS that saved Assad in 2015. Once all of Russia's resources got wasted in Ukraine taking Syria for the Jihadists became easy.

Russia had and still has bomber planes in its Syrian base throughout the conflict and it used the most simple gravity bombs while performing the bombing there (not glide bombs currently used in the Ukraine war). You can go to google maps and see a couple of SU planes being parked in the open even right now, but the exact number is difficult to ascertain due to the presence of hangars there.

However, if the ground army folds and gives up a million+ city in a matter of a couple of days and then rapidly retreats across the country in a matter of a couple of weeks the effect bombing can have is far far more limited, even with the same intensity as in 2016. Again, I'm not surprised at the conduct of the Syrian army, I'm surprised that neither Iran, Hezbollah or Iraqi militias got involved in any significant capacity. Iran does consider that area pretty important.

I'll assume you're right for the sake of argument.

how would militias even help if the entire army folds without resistance? Seems like sanctions and poverty were enough to demoralize the Syrian army regardless. Everyone willing to fight to the death for secularism in Syria already did so, leaving only either the Jihadists or the indifferent.

I think the Syrian army might have been notified that neither Iran nor militias are going to help them and it significantly contributed to their demoralization. Even after Aleppo, there was still time for Iranian controlled and allied forces to organize the defence of Homs or cities to the North of it IF they really wanted it. The news of the Iranian army entering Syria alone might have dissuaded the rebels from further advances and might have convinced them to dig in and hold what they already managed to take.

As for the militias, don't underestimate how many of them were fighting in Syria and what role they played there.
