Yes, there were genuine "transgenders" back then as well. Some *did* willingly undergo emasculating operations in an attempt to feminize. Heck, there were religious sects and cults throughout history that were all about self-castrating and adopting a female identity, often for religious purposes (which probably were great excuses to sign up in the first place). Certain native American tribes had the phenomenon as well, calling these rare individuals blessed and in tune with multiple spirits. Sometimes they would even acquire a certain high status within the tribe if they were of sufficient intellect or showcased sufficient knowledge and interest in, say, medicine, and spiritual matters. Other times they'd just work with the rest of the women.
But: the majority were forcibly castrated and emasculated, whether it was in China or in Africa or the ME.
Applying modern terminology on peoples of history devalues history and further retards contemporary people's frame of reference and ability to think clearly and objectively.
