The height of material science is ridiculously expensive. So you can start there. Like, for instance, and this doesn't really have anything to do with bombers, but, there's certain photovoltaic cells that only make economic sense for satellites.

I walked around one as a kid at at US airbase show in the UK... RAF Mildenhall, Amazing too see even though at the time I loved the stealth Nighthawk more as a kid.

Used to camp in a field and watch fighter jets all day, Then when they opened the base you could sit inside some jet planes, walked inside a B-52 bomber too, Was such kino mems as a child.

Unfortunately, the shows where a victim of 9/11 as the whole world went gay after that.

They cost 2 billion each because only 21 were ever built.

The per-unit price of an aircraft includes the R&D cost divided by the number of airframes that are actually built. If they'd made a thousand of them, the per-unit cost would probably only have been a couple hundred million.

Before 9-11 when I would fly as a kid the pilots would sometimes let come up and see the cockpit. One time waiting at a terminal of a major airport a pilot let me wear a headset and talk to the tower. Such a shame that kids nowadays will never experience that :(

Only the correct ratios of vacuum to iron to oxygen can create but a tiny component which can then be melted down in regular furnace.

Repeat this process over 30 times to attain the desired alignment of particles.

But make sure the furnace is large enough, it all needs to be one piece.

No, you only need a fast FCS fly by wire if the centre of pressure is in front of the centre of mass.
This is advantageous as you can reduce drag and increase speed but cable and stick flying wings were flown for decades before the B-2.

Yes. It is not built for speed which means it does not have to be made of Titanium like the SR-71 (funny story on how the Titanium was sourced from Russia through shell corporations). It is not even armored. It is built for stealth and is subsonic.

The B-2 was primarily built as a nuclear first-strike weapon against the Soviet Union so the production was shut down when the USSR collapsed. It wasn’t until 10 years later that the Air Force realized it was also useful for penetrating the airspace of tin-pot dictators for precision strikes. That might sound stupid, but in 1991 there aren’t any fancy precision strike weapons like GPS guided JDAMS, so it didn’t seem like you would need a HUGE GIANT INVISIBLE NUCLEAR BOMBER for anything other than nuclear conflicts between nation states.

The development is not the cost per plane.

The cost per plane from material turned into a unit is a price that's guesswork. You'll never know and neither will I. It's the same on every overpriced listing. They're a projection of power. So it make up these big dumb numbers.

Yes it literally cost billuons developing. Now that there is a blueprint and a factory producing them what's the price? 2 billion it has a nice ring to it. As in you'll never have one and neither will anybody else because they aren't for sale. 2 billion. It's a projection.

You're right it took longer making. Is it made out of asteroids or does it have collided materials. No and no. But it's all a big secret anyway. 2 billions worth. And Musk ain't buying one

Also; the coating has to be stripped and reapplied for every mission, or it won't work properly. This requires specialized facilities and equipment that further ballooned the cost.
It is also why whenever you see them during air shows and shit they look ragged. Similar story with F-22 and 35. Their coatings are more durable, but still need to be reapplied ffairly often.

There is a neat story about it that I know...

The outside of the airplane is coated in kind of paint that has microscopic ball bearings which are applied to the plane in airesol form along with the black paint. The microscopic ball bearing are supposed to cut down the radar signature .

In the 1980s the Soviets where desperate for a sample of this stuff. for obvious reason, so they concocted a fiendish plan! They found a some pencil pusher administrative employee who worked in the plant, which I believe was in Virginia, he had gambling debts and they bribed him like 100k. He didn't work on the production floor, but he had to walk through it every day, so the KGB agents gave him special 'sticky' shoes so that they could get their sample.

If you have ever seen that show 'The Americans' which is a great show, it's in that, but apparently it's a true story.

>strategic bombers were conceived
All post-World War II strategic bombers require inflight refueling to achieve intercontinental range.
The United States B-36β€”which was conceived and designed at the beginning of World War II (before inflight refuelling became a reality)β€”was the last bomber designed to fly between countries back-and-forth on its mission with internal fuel.

Also just low production quantity. They didn't cost $2 billion each to build, the entire program, include years of R&D and testing before they ever even built anything, spread across the the 20 or however many of them they bought came out to about ~$2 billion each. If they built another 100 of them they'd probably say they were $1 billion each instead since the R&D costs would be spread out of a larger quantity of planes.

Look at its successor, the B-21... They probably cost just about as much to build per unit, but they are already saying that entire program is only going to be about $750 million per plane... Northrop Grumman didn't suddenly because much more efficient with the governments money... Its just that its a B-2 derivative, most of the R&D is already done and thus not factored into the cost, and they are planning to build like 200 of them.

Majority of the B-2 development comes from Jack Northrops earlier flying wing bombers but the designers of the B-2 did visit the Ho-229 at least once and probably took a little inspiration from it.

Nice bit of trivia is Jack Northrop was shown the B-2 when it was being tested, by then old and very frail, fucked with illness. While watching it it's reported that he said "now I know why god has let me live so long"
