Mads Mikkelsen (21) from Tromsø experienced a nightmare when he was denied entry to the United States at Newark Airport on June 11. American immigration authorities (ICE) pulled him aside, subjected him to a long and intense interrogation about drugs and terrorism, among other things, and demanded the password to his phone under threat of a fine or imprisonment.
Two pictures on the cell phone, a caricature of Vice President JD Vance and a homemade wooden pipe, were found and led to further confrontation. Mikkelsen was strip-searched, forced to give blood samples and fingerprints, and held in a cell for over five hours without food or water.
He was then sent back to Norway without a formal explanation. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (UD) states that Norwegian authorities cannot intervene in such decisions, and emphasizes that travelers are responsible for their own entry regulations.
