Psychological projection is a defense mechanism in which a person unconsciously attributes their own unwanted thoughts, feelings, or impulses to someone else.
Example:

If someone feels hostile or angry, but cannot accept that about themselves, they might accuse someone else of being hostile.

A person who lies frequently might assume others are lying to them.

Why it happens:

It helps protect the ego by externalizing uncomfortable emotions or traits.

It's often unconscious—the person doesn't realize they're doing it.

Common forms:

Accusing others of being jealous, aggressive, untrustworthy, or insecure, when those are actually your own feelings.

Projection is common in everyday life and relationships, but when overused, it can distort reality and cause conflict.
