It is the source of both our basic restlessness as a race and our basic inquisitiveness. It is what makes adventurers of us, drives us to risk our lives in ventures which can bring us no conceivable material benefitโ€”something which is totally foreign to other races, accustomed to judging everything according to its utility only. It is the Faustian urge which has made our race the pre-eminent race of explorers, which has driven us to scale the highest mountains in lands inhabited by men of other races who have been content to remain always in the valleys. It is what, more than intellect alone, has made us likewise the pre-eminent race of scientistsโ€”especially in those days before the practice of science became a well-paid profession. It is what sent us to another world and has us now reaching for the stars.โ€ William Luther pierce

then the deal facilitates it

turns out this was not what he wanted at all

blames the deal

so a faustian spirit in this reguard would just be a retard

or for example not a thing what faustian spirit

if your useing it to describe reckless persuit unto something what is it in persuit of

faust is a tragic charicter

he wants power wealth and understanding

he makes a deal to get power wealth and understanding (pretend this isnt here because devil bad)

when he has power wealth and understanding it destroys him (pretend the deal didnt take his soul)

faust is a thought experiment culminating in the idea of a faustian pact a faustian spirit is not a thing

we could say our zeitghiest is a faustain pact for profit

it would be silly to say our faustian spirit demands profit

it sounds good though but its retarded

Yes, andโ€ฆ? Thatโ€™s where it comes from. Itโ€™s a reference to the Faust of legend who makes a deal with the devil for earthly power to satiate his boredom and curiosity, largely by intellectual means. Spengler said that the West is Faustian in the same way that the Greco-Romans were Promethean.

No, itโ€™s not synonymous with the devil. Itโ€™s innocently devilish. Faustian is ripping apart the natural world with science and technology to know and to dominate simply because you have an insatiable yearning for knowledge and power. You might know yearning for knowledge and power has terrible ends, is devilish, but the impulse goes almost unquestioned as such because it comes naturally. Science is literally an inversion of Christian theology, but Western man rarely considers it such a way. Western man considers it the perfectly natural and good pursuit of betterment. This is where the deal with the devil comes in.

Thereโ€™s significance in that though. The point is that earthly power is ultimately illusory, meaningless, and destructive. Look at science and technology. Are we really any better off for it? Will we pay a price for using it?

Perhaps that is true- the ultimate shallowness of worldly endeavors is a point being made.. but If we are referring to Marlowe's version of Faust, it is generally in the form of English Renaissance drama in that it is sort of a drama of the humors and as such it is mostly about people's shortcomings leading to some comeuppance.

I mean it is not a humors play per se but most Renaissance drama has that angle. You generally see people who have some particular imbalance of the humors that results in a negative trait which they get some justice for in one way or another at the conclusion of the play.

They are moralizing stories generally. Faust is a fool and his worldly excesses greed, hubris, and laziness get the better of him and he makes a deal with the devil and pays for it and gets dragged to hell for eternity. The point of the play is don't be like Faust. I think the target audience for this lesson would have been to urban nobility and men about town indulging excessively in all sorts of burgeoning intellectual academic pursuits and occult studies. It is reminiscent of the old classic horror movies

Right. It is basically a tragedy of the humors. Which is to say that the gist of the story is- don't sell your soul for worldly pleasures. Faust is a fool whose obsessions and worldly endeavors lead him to sell his soul like an idiot.

He could have just as well sold his soul to have the live of some woman etc. Anyways you could make the argument though that it is also making the point not to fuck around with the occult which I'm sure would have been in vogue for uppercrust and nobility of Marlowe's time.

yea but he was no fool he made a deal with the devil for earthly power

its foolish to deal with devils is a meta analysis that faust reveals to use this is also a wild and wide swing if the devil is not litteral thus cementing the necesity for a focal point of a litteral devil undermineing his life litterly

but if we imagine him to be figureative then he is not faust and if we asign fausts failing to himself and not the devil we dont need the litteral devil in the story at all

a faustian spirit would be a demon

look at it however you like beit a litteral demon
or the spirit that would figuratively represent a demon willing to hurt others for selfish pleasure and ultimately resign themselfs to selfish destruction

In Marlowe's Faust- he was an idiot who (against available wisdom) sold his soul for worldly pleasures after meddling with the occult and got punished for it.

It is mostly just a moralizing story about dont be an idiot like Faust. BUT I think there is an element of adjusting this old story to speak to the changing mindset of the Renaissance vs the wisdom of the old world.

Youre completely analyzing it wrong like some kind of dorm room 1101 circumlocution world salad.

It is a Renaissance drama. We should analyze it as a Renaissance drama. Period. These dramas of this time are defined by being tragedies or comedies of the humors. AKA "every character has some excesses and they get their just desserts accordingly". While Faust is not like a Ben Jonson tier humors play it has the same fundamental angle. There isnt some meta analysis of the debil or any of that nonsense.

Faust is a dope who thinks he is hot shit and desires world things and gets dragged to hell for it. It sounds simple and it is but it is very artfullt written. End of story.

again but he searches for power and finds it
its not like he does not gain power

i think the reason we have a litteral demon is not because of the meta level anaylsis of a fake demon in faust himself read line 2 of not a littteral demon in above post

but because of universal forces and laws at play such as karma ect (potentially) aswell as godly things and persuit of other or non earthly pleasures

the litteral demon is a litteral metaphor for litteral forces of nature that will reward such behaviour

but again it all comes down to a faustian pact not a faustian spirit his undoing is not his tertiary mysandry and poor charicter it is the deal itself

it is giving in to the forces that will help you but take your everything EVEN YOUR VERY SOUL

The art of Renaissance drama is in word smithing. Beautiful use of language, clever turn of phrase, good dialogue, but generally they have a very simple but clever entertaining moralizing story.

This isnt some meta philosophical piece of literature. It is a drama meant to be performed and any higher level implications behind it were usually topical or political for the time. People like to infuse their modern literature with all sorts of pie sky philosophical nonsense. They didn't really do that back then.
>clever artful use of language and dialogs
>simple but clever moralizing story
>entertaining and memorable.
>maybe some background message addressing topical events/issues in an indirect way.
Thats Renaissance drama in a dialogs,

It's some of the best writing ever made because of this simple formula. Stop trying to imbued these masterwork with your indulgent pseudo philosophical modernist James Joyce tier meta literary bullshit.

Its like Baroque music in fugue. It is formulaic and simple at face value. But it is very artfully and beautifully made. Don't try to analyze it like some kind of goddam post modernist jazz nonsense.

Well first of all, Faustian refers to Spengler who referred to Goetheโ€™s Faustian and not Marloweโ€™s Faust. Goetheโ€™s Faust is redeemed in his striving unlike the others. But in all Faustian tales the essential thing is not shortcomings. Faust makes the bargain because heโ€™s exhausted his learning in theology, law, and medicine, the sort of โ€œnobleโ€ medieval intellectual arts. He makes the deal with the devil in part because of erotic desire over Gretchen and in part because of he wants to address his intellectual restlessness and instinctual hunger for power. Itโ€™s only a shortcoming in so far as itโ€™s a natural proclivity. The tale is a cautionary one about indulging in oneโ€™s impulses, not just bodily but intellectually. Mephistopheles explains all of this at the opening of the play. But the devilโ€™s power is always a monkeyโ€™s paw sort of deal. Everything he does backfires in the material world. The lesson is that power can have evil origins and as such yield terrible fruits. The main difference between Marlowe and Goethe is not so much the matter of shortcoming or ignorance but the result of your willing. For Marlowe, Faust wills what he knows he should not and pays the ultimate price for it with his immortal soul. For Goethe, itโ€™s through the yearning and striving that Faust comes back to the divine mother and is ultimately saved. Goethe literally thinks that even those who do terrible things with noble ambitious can be redeemed and saved. Marlowe doesnโ€™t. He thinks the commandments are clear and violating them means paying the price. Tragic either way, but for different reasons. Marloweโ€™s tragedy is fundamentally spiritual, while Goetheโ€™s is more material and perhaps psychological.

the fact that the term faustian pact is still used widely today is clear evidence of the non-normality of this specific play

even if it was not intended as transdental philisophucal litriture it can easily be analiysed as such

ill tell you one enduring philisophical idea

A faustian pact.

I am totally open to the idea that Goethe Faust is trying to indulge in some kind of pedantic masturbatory philosophical nonsense like this.

But the Marlowe version is not. The Marlowe version is just damned good artful wordsmithing with a basic moralizing story set to a memorable and known classic story. That's all it is and it is far more valuable.

The story of Faust has been around for a long time and there are multiple versions of course but the Marlowe version is mostly valuable because it is just goddam good word smithing. Thats all. And I am more of. Ben Jonson fan (who I consider the superior wordsmith) and could recite you lines of that but none of Faust come to kind. I dont consider them philosophical lol just artful clever use of the English language.

It's sort of like modern art vs Renaissance art.
>Renaissance art- finely wrought masterwork of skill and taste on classic subject matter. There may be some other layers but they are mostly topical or clever- not deep or philosophical.
>modern art- hamfisted and generally of poor skill and taste... but supposedly imbued with indukgent philosophical notions that bozos like to sit around and have coffee table conversation over.

I am generally not a fan of philosophy. I think it is mostly indulgent coffee table games. I like Renaissance drama precisely because it is beautiful without the indulgent philosophical baggage (for the most part). Philosophy is to religion as masturbation is to coitus. I of course went down the philosophy rabit holes as a younger man mostly just to come full circle and realize what a pointless mess it is.

No, there is more wisdom in a walk in the woods than any philosophy book. Generally your higher instincts and intuitions are what define man. Low brow intuition informed by experience and a judicious use of intellect. Not wallowing around like a fish on a bank in a bunch of metaphysical questions and musings which we will never have answers for and we're not meant to have answers for.

I absolutely disagree. You can call it masturbatory philosophy but the fact is both authors have their own worldviews which imply certain ethics and certain ends. In neither case does it necessarily have to be rationalized. The story proceeds from their understanding either way. Goethe was basically a liberal in a rapidly modernizing world. Marlowe inhabited an essentially religious world. The latter was more open to a muse that communicated salvation for the bargainer than the former. Thatโ€™s all. My point though is rather about the essential thing, the tendency. Both Fausts know they shouldnโ€™t strike a bargain. They do it anyway. This is less a shortcoming and more a willful action. The story in either case is about the consequences of willing this or willing that, not shortcomings. What makes Marloweโ€™s Faust stand out so much is that unlike the other characters of his era but very much like Shakespeareโ€™s Macbeth or Hamlet, the tragedy is a tragedy not of the persona but of the will. Itโ€™s about destinies and choices, not shortcomings. Thatโ€™s kinda like saying Marvellโ€™s poems are about the frustrations and fruits of gardening.

You gotta read Spengler bro. He never said the Westโ€™s downfall was inevitable. He thought civilizations go through life cycles and the Westโ€™s life cycle is nearing its terminal phase, but it need not die or be killed. It can live on in a culturally dead, spiritually fake, civilizationally unimpressive ossified state, like a tree that turns hard and doesnโ€™t die but no longer grows.

Faustian spirit just refers to what he saw as the essential character of Western civilization: a will to a relentless pursuit of knowledge and power, even at the expense of traditions, morals, and safety. The world tries to send rockets into space because they want to compete with the Faustian, but the Faustian sends rockets into space because he just needs to know what itโ€™s like and feel the power rush of doing it.

What you have going on here is a creator of incomprehensible power and understanding, that has, for some reason unknown to us decided to creat some tiny ant-like creature and graced it with a single drop of godliness (which is true being/identity). This little ant like creation exists in this incomprehensibly perfect natural creation where we do all sorts of foolish and ugly things (but also beautiful things). We are basically stupid, and we obsess over things, we never learn our lessons, we are slaves to all sorts of urges that we try to overcome and we fancy ourselves little gods and creators only to be humbled by our creator as we thoughtlessly blunder about despite a few shining moments of wisdom and beauty and understanding.

its about mans dominion over nature and his hubris
in a sense western man has achieved something nobody before had which is to become truly apart from nature, not an animal
revealed the world to itself

if you see anything by wyatt stagg he analyses every story about man versus nature as a critique of white europeans, true but not holistic so
the story makes no sense if you put a bushman or an arab into it, too close to an animal to be polemic or more neutral to close to nature

have you seen the painting "wanderer im nebel" the man overseeing the fog from the mountain top? if you put a non white man into it then the entire painting makes no sense
