My mum is not one of the world's few intelligent women. She worked as a typist until they started making all the typists redundant in the 00s and then retired.

My dad studied architecture and dropped out in third year. I've never spoken to him about why. He worked a few different jobs before picking up a trade in his early 30s, set up working for himself. He made decent money but he never planned, never modernised or expanded his business, never thought about anything other than what was right in front of him. Like 35 years ago he set up shop in this concrete shed he rented, when he retired during COVID he was still working out of that shed, still using very similar equipment to do very similar jobs to what he was doing when he started. It's something I've been internally kvetching about recently actually. Growing up my dad worked 6 day weeks late mornings and late nights, so we didn't really see him all that much, and now I'm kind of like - what was it for? He could have just worked some 9-5 job somewhere, been home more, made more money and had a decent pension. If he was going to spend 6 days a week at work he could have at least been building something substantial. If I wanted to take over the business, there's a few grand's worth of equipment, that's kind of it. There's a lease entitlement but no lease, he always just had verbal agreements and paid rent cash in hand. There are no contracts, no structure. He just spent his entire life working harder, not smarter, and ended up with not very much to show for it.

There is the house though, the house I grew up in is in an area that became very sought after, so there'll be a decent chunk for me when they die. I mainly wish they'd been a little smarter so they could enjoy their retirement more.

whatever wealth my grandparents had mostly went to medical bills and senior/nursing homes and whatever was left after their death divided up among their children. Whatever my parents received is probably sitting in their retirement fund now. But so far I haven't seen any of it. My family was single income growing up and we had just enough to live comfortably without any extra stuff like trips abroad or having lots of expensive gifts etc.

Now I'm doing fairly well for myself, having a stable childhood really helps. I probably won't receive much inheritance and I'll probably give it to my brother anyway. Divorce. I added up what my parents had before divorce and it would been about 10 mil. Today they each have just shy of 3 mil a piece in real estate.

My parents are comically terrible with money. I think they had a $2,000 credit card balance out of college, my dad freaked out, and after they paid it off he declared that credit and investments are all crooked. My dad used his entire 401k to fix a plumbing issue on a house and then they sold the house. They filed for bankruptcy because of tax debt (my mom was 1099 and didn't file quarterly). They made $100,000 selling the aforementioned house. They put $50,000 in a 12 month CD at a credit union and the rest is slowly dwindling away. They rent and plan on doing so until they die. They always have work but they are getting older and older and they won't be able to stop, which is going to be a major issue as they enter their 70s.

Also my dad has worked for the military, local government, public, private, everything, and he never secured any sort of pension or retirement. He never had a meaningful 401k or any sort of long term investment in anything. They have always been thrifty so I don't know where all the money went. My dad has been fired from every job he has ever had, always 3-5 years in because he is passive aggressive and pisses people off. So I guess any savings get burned when he is between jobs.

Mom spent it all on stupid shit. What's crazy is when my dad met my mom she had to go to these mandatory night school classes after going bankrupt. Should have been a red flag to my dad but I can't complain too much since they made me. Dad made great money for years but he never actually looked at the accounts so around 07 08 we were bankrupt. Dads job market dwindles and dies out, Mom leaves, house forecloses thanks to a shit mortgage company that purposely 'lost' peoples payments so they could foreclose properties (there was a class action later, we got like $30 out of it).
