Yeah, I don't think the concern is wiping Iran off the map so much as the risk of there being an occupation while they set up a new government, along with all the expenses involved.
The Iranian regime sucks. But I'm not sure our budget can take the expense given the fact that we're still paying off the last two occupations. And if we destroy the regime occupation is necessary because we can't afford to have a power vacuum in the region because who knows who the fuck will wind up taking power under those circumstances.
It's easy to say "the Shah's heir." But even strong possibilities aren't a given when we have no control over it.
