What’s the point of Russian air defense systems? The recent Iran bombing showed they don’t work. Iran had the world’s 3rd largest air defense network and it failed to defend anything at any level.

Hang on one second? Iranian air defense was disabled, and far more attacks came from within Iran ,specifically targeting air defenses until air Israeli superiority.

The problem Iran had was a lack of any real satellite coverage. Combined into a lot of incompetent blind spots and a telecommunication network and systems that were repeatedly penetrated by multiple attacks.

We rewind it's always had this problem whether it was nuclear facilities disabled or the assassination of personnel inside Iran.

As far air defenses being penetrated it's the same story despite the system. Drones are faster undermining them and hypersonic flight. However they're still a lot better than not having them in any case.

Topically is that suggestion they're defective. No. But they can be breached.

It really didn't invest like Israel has into air defenses.

What were its systems s300, until recently very recently the s400 was purchased, and something Chinese dunno hos many of those, and it had been developing its own. Its own was virtually redundant. S300 is outdated. 1 or such s400 system isn't enough to stop over 100 aircraft bombing it while its radar stations were disabled.

S300 Israel had heaps of practice evading in Syria.

They need an integrated, layered air defense and much better counter intel units before they worry about nukes.

This just shows that drones and missiles are the future of air warfare.

Also there is an asymmetry - it's much easier (and cheaper) to strike offensively with air weapons than it is to defend against them.

Both sides had similar problems defending against drones and missiles, although obviously Iran was hit much harder because their tech is old and they are up against the US which backstops Israel.

This shows that

A. For Iran, the logic of making a miniaturized nuke to put on an IRBM never made more sense, as they got slammed by the Israelis and their diplomacy did nothing.

2. For Israel, their missile defense worked okay I guess, but Israel has permanently lost its aura of invincibility, and it's been proven that Israel doesn't have the production capacity for interceptors to defend against a well equipped nation state for more than a couple of weeks without the USA.

Everyone watching this conflict who is resource constrained is gonna be building drones and missiles, not air defense, as they think about how nukes guarantee strategic safety.
