I know the Iran/Israel stuff is exciting, but has anyone else noticed how Russia is now setting up another major city for encirclement? Does Ukraine have a plan to stop it?

they're still on the outskirts of chasiv yar, which itself is a suburb of bakhmut, which was the last major battle and fell like 2 years ago. i used to think the russians didn't want to destroy infrastructure but it's plain to see now that after the saw what urban warfare did to wagner in bakhmut, they are far too casualty averse to actually storm a city. which is retarded because if they just stormed kiev with 200,000 or 300,000 soldiers the war would be over instead of losing like 500 guys a day for the next 10 years to drones in half baked encirclement operations. this war is retarded and it seems neither side actually wants to win and instead is just hoping the other side collapses. also, how does russia not have air superiority after 3 years? it took israel 3 hours to establish air superiority over iran and before the war most people would have ranked iran higher than ukraine as far as military power goes. ukraine is definitely losing and russia has the initiative blah blah blah but russia just seems completely incapable of mounting any large scale operations at this point.

Because it's a phoney war, there are many questions or the Russian leadership it using the war to demilitarize NATO. Why didn't Russia attack from the North in earnest? Why haven't they blown the Dnieper Bridges? Its clear they are using the Ukraine war to fuck with NATO, with their ultimate goal to launch an attack on Poland and the Baltics most likely. They don't really care about land, if they did they would of launched a counter attack once Ukraine's offensive failed in 23. They are using the war to learn about NATO weapons and tactics as well as destroying their equipment knowing they cannot replace theirs's as fast as their own.

all good questions. as far as why they haven't attacked from the north in earnest and why haven't they blown the dniepr bridges, those are the most baffling questions of the war. i just don't see how losing, on the low end, 250k dead and 750k wounded fucks with nato nearly as much as it fucks with themselves, especially with their demography. i think it is a kremlin eugenics plan to cull all churkas while leaving the white populations of moscow and st. petersburg relatively unscathed. they saw the central asians and mogols were about to swamp them demographically so this is how they went about fixing their ethnic mix.

Nothing new. The entire war has been Russia slowly encircling Ukrainians whom their incompetent commanders refuse to pull back, then suddenly within a few weeks tightening the noose and eradicating tens of thousands of Ukrainians as the remnants fall back to the next position Zelensky refuses to abandon and the cycle repeats.

i'm not asking why they are fighting, it is pretty obvious that it is in their strategic interest. my question is why they seem so averse to actually taking any major cities or fighting any urban battles in towns bigger than 50k. they've been within striking distance of kharkiv and sumy for nearly a year now and the most they've done is sent the odd motorcycle recon unit into some suburbs. the first major city falls and most of ukraine's backers might see the writing on the wall and walk. all this fucking around in encirclement ops just adds credence to the whole stalemate narrative and lets the uk, the french, and the baltics delude themselves into thinking ukraine is actually winning.

because the strategy is working. Putin's message is that Ukraine is occupied by a CIA planted regime and he is liberating them. Large cities means more civilian casualties, why fight them inside of the city when they are perfectly happy being killed in the fields. You really are one dumb fucking europoor.

if you actually read the thread you'd see the first thing i said is that russia seems completely incapable of mounting any large scale operations. so obviously i've considered it. my question is more about why they are fighting for the donbass instead of taking sumy, which opens the door to kiev. bashing your head against places that have been fortified for 10+ years instead of just taking your extra field army of 400,000 guys that is just sitting around and pressuring the capital seems absolutely retarded. if they besiege kiev all of those formations fighting in the donbass might be forced to withdraw to support the capital anyways.

pretty fucking funny coming from a yank where your entire war strategy is gain air superiority and then march on the capital. seems to work pretty good too other than the problem of creating insurgencies. the russians did this in checnya as well, just leveled grozny and took it instead of chasing churkas all over the mountains.

It's all about attrition at this point. Unfortunately for Ukraine I think the goal for Russia is two fold. First reduce NATO weapons, ammo and vehicles to the point of irrelevance, a goal which has largely been achieved. Their second goal is the demographic elimination of Ukraine, not their yet but getting close. I'm of the opinion that Russia's plan for the end of the war is to just apply constant pressure on the entire front until there's nobody left.

>Why didn't Russia attack from the North in earnest?
With what men and what equipment? The Russian army is big but not that big. Russia's economy is also big, but not that big again. They don't have an army of millions of soldiers with another, much larger army, of millions upon
millions of engineers, welders, technicians, electricians and so on to furnish their soldiers with sufficient quantities of IFVs, APCs, and tanks.

>Why haven't they blown the Dnieper Bridges?
Do you think this is some secret checkmate move lol
Ukraine can just repair these bridges and use pontoons to cross the river. It's not difficult. Russia could attack these bridges, and they have, but it's not cost-effective.

>They don't really care about land, if they did they would of launched a counter attack once Ukraine's offensive failed in 23
This is the Russian counter attack. Russia is maxed out and punching as hard as it can.

My guess is it will largely be a repeat of the start of the war. They'll come down both sides of the Dnipro to Kiev. Essentially it will be a return to big arrow warfare, much like how WW1 turned out. Lots of movement at first, horrific casualties, turned into static warfare, more horrific casualties but then one army breaks and suffers even more horrific casualties as they retreat.

they didn't have the intents to occupy kiev and be done with it, and while it is true they could do that, there is a factor called NATO stockpile attrition, which is far more expensive and hard to replace equipment being sent to the frontline to be destroyed by cheap drones, and while russia has certainly lost more vehicles, it's inflicted more damage on western stockpiles than on theirs (as long as their economy can handle it). That is from the military aspect, however, and I'm sure anyone with over 2 braincells can realize the geopolitical effects of prolonging the war are much larger.

Yeah I'm sure Russia would have btfo Kiev in assault ops while outnumbered like 100 to 1. And I'm sure they could have instantly teleported a couple of new armies there to reduce that while also supplying them.
It's no wonder EU military is a joke, they hire dudes like you to do strategy and policy.

>having a 2023 defense budget of just $100 billion
Again, it's bullshit. Russia uses off-budget risky credit that the kremlin says they'll pay back when the war is over that is 5x that size. And further, in 2024, their defense budget grew 2x from 2023.
They'll keep going because the alternative is their banks collapsing.
Again, it needs another asterisk, because it's only by some definition of producing. What's counted as production in this case is refurbishing the massive amounts of soviet stocks.

>why they haven't attacked from the north in earnest
The Sumy offensive already got counter-attacked so it's clear they don't have the capacity for larger offensives.
The main reason for that I can't say, but my suspicion is lack of equipment. Since they're doing concentrated fire, they probably don't have enough cannons for decent firepower on a larger front, even if they have the shells.

They are using the exact same air tactics as the US did vs the Houthis, and the exact same tactics that Russia is using, except that Russia keeps doing it for years while USA/Israel have to tap out after a month, or a week, because they blew the budget. All they have to do is say "mission accomplished" and the retards will cheer.

By the way, are there any signs that either side is gathering forces and training for a major breakthrough operation in the rear?

I think Russia just aiming to create a buffer zone for some places like Sumy. They aren't looking at taking the Oblast.

If you had 200k idiological zealots armed with small arms, grenades and modern st launchers. Riding in full speed each on their own dirt bike/a couple on an atv. Just bum rushing in through a gap in the front line you created with artillery. Then it could probably work.

The thing is everyone would need to be fearless and ok with suffering 90% casuality rate and almost complete certain death for all the guys that go first. And humans don't work like that unless indocrinate them since they're kids.

This. Even if Russia did find a way to gain ground faster Europe will just give Ukraine more and better equipment plus there's a limitless supply of mercenaries from south America

The only way to win a modern war is invasion of Iraq/blitz which Russia is never going to be capable of

Hopefully China realizes the only way they're taking Taiwan is to go nuclear, that would be awesome

A modern version of the literal Brusilov Offensive.
What's even worse is that even if you launch a surprise attack on an enemy that has become accustomed to long-term trench warfare in a negative sense and bypass their defenses, everyone now has access to aerial reconnaissance capabilities without air superiority. Dealing with these damn drones is a pain in the ass.
I don't think either side can do anything about it unless one side is completely exhausted or there's some sci-fi bullshit at this time.

Yeah but with cheap chinese dirt bikes and atvs for every soldier you could have tens of thousands of guys with 50kg of gear and ammo 500km+ deep 24h after a break through. This wasn't possible in ww1.

It would be absolute chaos. But since the attackers know that everyone in every direction is hostile the chaos is mostly on their side. Imagine the guys manning a check point 75km from 12h after the break through with guys cutting coms, spreading false info etc. They wouldn't know where the enemy is coming from. But you would need some SS tier ideological zealots to do it. Like 100k brandenburgers

This is a pure projection, as the Ukraine is already defaultin on it's credits and Rusia services it's debt despite being sanctioned.
Where does that "risky credit" comes from? Iran? North Korea? China?

>neither side actually wants to win and instead is just hoping the other side collapses
This is Russia's plan, Ukraine is forced to play by their rules and is at a strict disadvantage due to manpower and ammunition shortages
Russia is just playing it safe, it seems they calculated this is less risky and costly than

>muh air superiority
Russia has air superiority for all intents and purposes, the Ukrainian air force has been completely neutered. Russia is fighting a ground war and needs its aircraft for CAS, which leaves them vulnerable to spaa, cheap anti-air systems and manpads, which Ukraine has a lot of.

Israeli aircraft bombed strategic targets from far away and ran off, they did not have to support a ground force at short ranges which is far riskier
