Got a job, started on the new year (interview process took 4 months). Took the lay of the land, decided not to stress pushing myself too hard because it was clear that I wouldn't be there for long. Laid off first week of June. Exit interview filled with lots of boomer platitudes about how I needed to conform better to "office norms" (that everyone else ignored with zero consequence), but also that they'd planned these layoffs months in advance if certain company-wide metrics weren't met, so it wasn't a reflection of my performance.

I've been applying to 10 minimum a day, usually closer to 15 & sometimes 20. The callback rate is around 3%-5% for me, and I don't have an impressive resume. I have a Master's Degree, 3 years of serious relevant experience earned before I attended grad school and a tight resume; sent 230 job applications since May 20th with only 1 non-committal informal interview (only thanks to a mutual acquaintance) and one job offer that was well below what I could even survive on (live in NJ and the pay was 45k, rent is $2000 a month here).

I also worked the entire two years of grad school for the University as a TA.

When I got my Bachelor's, I only applied to 60 jobs before I had 4 interviews and 2 solid offers before I even graduated.

As someone who has hired people and knows the process, most managers hire off "gut feelings". The candidate gave them warm fuzzies that can't really be quantified. This is because the candidate created a real interpersonal connection outside of their resume. Of course there are situations where the hiring manager's boss will do a follow up interview and say "fuck your warm fuzzies we aren't hiring this dude", so doing well in that interview is also required. But even if you are so-so with the boss, usually it will result in him telling the hiring manager "hey it's your call". If they have warm fuzzies they will make the call in your favor.
