>>508722140I actually just looked it up, about the same number of Americans are on socialized healthcare as the population in the UK (69 million) but expenditure is 5x in the USA (200 vs 1,000 billion). There were 16 million veterans with VA health expenditure of $125 billion (though most veterans prefer private insurance, for sake of argument assume they all use tricare).
That means Medicare spends $14,000/person/year on universal healthcare, VA spends $8,000/person/year, and NHS $3,000 (though based on usage statistics they claim $11,000 per patient).
Healthcare expenditure in these USA (including Medicare and tricare) was $4.5 trillion, or 13.8k per person, in 2022. That means that compared to Medicare and NHS, private healthcare is not actually that much more expensive despite the massive improvement in service. So even with the identified inefficiencies I mentioned in the other post, it's still competitive with the rest of the world.
