From what I read, a lot of the people in the Syrian government were paid off by the west. So when the war came they simply took their money and left. Then you had a three part attack by Al Qaeda backed by the U.S., Israel which is also backed byu the U.S., and Egypt that was also backed by the U.S. fighting a Syrian military that had been paid off by America.
