A nuclear meltdown is a much slower, dirtier reaction and irradiated material is blown around as dust. It's more like a dirty bomb which is not meaningfully different from any other bomb designed to disperse toxic material.

When a subatomic particle is traveling in a material, it can only go so far before impacting an atom. This distance is called the "mean free path".

The mean free path of a neutron in uranium is actually pretty big, a good portion of a meter if I recall.

Basically when the neutron impacts another uranium atom, it has the chance to split off more neutrons. Those neutrons themselves will travel and impact more atoms.

The rate at which the pieces can be forced together will determine the strength of the explosion, so they will actually use explosive charges to push them together as fast as possible.
The "gun type" weapon will take a different approach, and fire a stream of neutrons at a sub-critical mass, so that the rate of neutron generation rises above the rate of neutron expulsion, and it explodes. This one never quite made sense to me, but apparently it works.

A much more powerful explosion can be generated through a hydrogen fusion reaction. But achieving the initial-temperature for that explosion is only achievable through a nuclear bomb. That's why fusion bombs will ignite the fusion mass, with a fission mass.

Yes, that's a good question, how? With other phenomenon, the approach we take is to model the phenomenon with basic theory, then do a small scale demonstration to verify the phenomenon. Then we can make calculations to scale it up and make estimates about it's properties (power, energy, etc etc) at larger scale. This is what we do with all kinds of mundane phenomenon. We can make tiny sparks in a lab to examine the properties of arcing electricity (lightning). We can make tiny model internal combustion engines to study them for engineering purposes (test a new design). However the one caveat with the engines is the cube square law (that can be accounted for). We can study aerodynamic forces by using wind tunnels and scale models.
However, it's awfully convenient that this inscrutable nuclear phenomenon (chain reaction generating energy) does not adhere to this principle. You can't say, make a tiny miniature nuclear bomb with about the same power as an M80 or maybe a few sticks of dynamite, just to demonstrate the principle. It's conveniently one of the few physical phenomena that escapes this method of scrutiny. Pretty convenient, huh?

Anyway, the truth about nukes is that they aren't nearly as scary as they're made out to be. The blast radius of a MOAB is about 1 mile, which is similar to smaller tactical nukes. The blast radius of Tsar Bomba was only about 20 miles. They're literally just big bombs, and their strategic use could be completely replaced by just using conventional weapons in mass to achieve the same exact result. Even the nuclear fallout aspect is overblown, it doesn't really matter if the city you just destroyed is contaminated, it's fucked either way, they can rebuild there or somewhere else. And global fallout also doesn't really matter, the earth is way too big and even if you set off every nuke on the planet at the same time, all you'd end up doing is mildly raising the cancer rates for anywhere that didn't get an unlucky amount of radiation falling out.

MAD is failing now. I'm pretty sure the US military already has figured out how to achieve near 100% ballistic missile interception rates, which means China probably has too.
