He doesn't need Taiwan for that anymore. Within a few years China would have caught up to Taiwan's capabilities. The only reason they want Taiwan is to deny America a meat shield. Taiwan and China are huge trading partners that use each other for profit. Invading Taiwan would undo decades of diplomacy across the world that China is dependant on.
