For online games this means that once they stop supporting the game, they will have to make it playable without them running servers. This means in practice that they have to release the server software so anyone can run their own private server and you'll still be able to play that game.
The problem with online games is that once the support stops, the game is completely dead and lost forever unless some autist goes out of his way to write a replacement server (which isn't trivial and takes a lot of time and effort).
This is how things SHOULD be. If you pay for something you should be able to use it and not depend on a publisher supporting it for eternity. If they no longer want to support it, fine, then release the server software and let others deal with the headache.
