Same thing, ancient Romans were more similar in appearance to modern day English people and Anglo Americans/Canadians and now they look different. There is a specific phenotype that builds the most successful civilizations and it’s been the same phenotype forever. This is why ancient mummies from middle eastern ancient royalty are regularly DNA tested as being Anglo Saxon.

Now, if there is only one phenotype which does this, this would of course be the greatest people on earth and TRULY blessed by god. Romans didn't become Italians. Italians only have a small percentage of Roman DNA. Lombards intermarrying with Cisalpine Gauls became North Italians, while Greeks getting raped by Arabs became South Italians. Romans left a lasting cultural impact, but the Romans themselves became depopulated from war and starvation (Italy in antiquity relied on African grain for food, and the Vandal conquest of Africa caused mass starvation), and eventually were a minority that became assimilated by their conquerors.
