I feel exactly what you’re describing and I’m losing my mind because it feels like 90% of those around me are oblivious/NPCs in awareness to this.

I’m a physician, became an attending a couple of years ago. Even the quality of medical care/clinical decision making/education seems like it’s deteriorating. People are so obsessed with filling their CVs with research/filler nonsense for the sake of looking good so they can match fellowship/competitive specialties that they don’t even care about how good they actually are clinically. What’s worse is the existing system reinforces this by selecting for the appearance of competitiveness in these metrics as opposed to actual ability/effort/empathy etc.

Inb4 all physicians are bad, we’re not and vast majority are trying to help but my point is this process your describing seems to be infiltrating almost every aspect of society, even echelons historically held to high standard.

I can’t help but feel like this is a consequence of overpopulation/globalization, akin to the “Rat Utopia” study.
