A skyhook is what descends from the heavens to prop up belief systems that are not based in reality. Ideologies that rely on supernatural explanations have this in common.
Conversely, if you've built a scaffold, each piece being part of the support structure that holds your ideas up, it is much more likely to be correct.
Evolution is a good example. Like Gulliver's bonds, there are thousands of 'threads' holding it down. Even if some of them are cut, it doesn't change things because there are many others that affirm this is a correct interpretation of what we see.
If humans need god beliefs to survive and stay sane, we deserve to go mad and die out.
