The answer is that you don't deserve eternal life, so Christ presented the man with a a task he could not ever achieve by his own will.
You can never deserve to inherit eternal life, but Christ earned it for you.
Just as you should not dismember yourself as Matthew 18, you will not inherit eternal life via a mere vos of poverty.
