It depends, but for ones like PH
It's an insular economy, it's a closed circle with advertisers but it ends up being traffickers and lots of unsavory shit, scammers, snake oil, etc, it's really disgusting shit and actually criminal, but our courts refuse to press charges on actual victimizing crimes, because politicians would rather get their power moves to try and impose digital IDs and tracking for everyone instead of actually protect trafficking victims.
For some stuff like OF it's fucked up people using it as a parasocial relationship because society has fucked them so hard they have no hope of holding a meaningful relationship with another person.
For 2D stuff, hentai and the like, it's just donations and commissions.
I dropped "Live" stuff almost a decade ago because I couldn't ethically consume it after finding how their economics worked and after the San Diego trafficking incident where they didn't face any punishment. OF I find incredibly predatory.
2D sites are rather well supported by their communities and patronage basically keeps it alive on a voluntary basis, and a person isn't having the perma alone whaling for a parasocial relationship like OF enables.
I personally urge people to drop live stuff, and to refuse and shun OF, but I hold that the government shouldn't be the one banning shit. The government SHOULD be arresting people for trafficking and scams, but it doesn't, as it's uninterested in protecting victims, but instead just grabbing power.
Porn is also a symptom of a sick society, not a cause, people don't like being in their goon cave, people want meaningful relationships and families and to socialize, but there's no meaningful "Third places" for people to go and socialize and mingle and meet others, and people are afraid of relationships due to MeToo and other issues, people don't want to be called a rapist or get fucked in divorce court, and it's too expensive to have a relationship/kids.
