How did he rise to power? I know in his youth he wanted to he an artist and he spent some time in the army during ww1 but what happened after that allowed him to become leader of germany and the nazi party?

If you're serious, I STRONGLY recommend
"Der Fuhrer" by Konrad Heiden.
It's a biography of Adolf Hitler, first published in 1936-1937, translated into English (and slightly expanded) in 1944.
Note those dates, it was written WHILE Hitler was still alive, which means there's absolutely no modern lens tainting the biography, such as holocaust accusations, etc.
It's a thick book, but covers it all incredibly well.
