Kek, I cycle to work year-round in any weather, 42km per day. I rarely saw anyone else cycling in the winter, maybe 2 people per year and they were clearly just short hauling.

One day I was rounding a paved trail around a lake and hit a massive slick of black ice, but run studs so handled it. On the other side though, after climbing the hill, I saw this cute woman in her 30s biking toward me. Everything about her screamed casual, from her gear to her riding position. She gave me this big smile and seemed like she was probably nice. A couple of years prior I would have spoken to her and every instinct was to warn her but I knew not to "mansplain" so just kept my mouth shut apart from "hi". I kept going but stopped and looked back when she was getting to the icy part. Her bike immediately shot out from under her and she slammed hard... her hip and shoulder took most of it. I've seen a lot of crashes but this was one of the hardest, ice is unforgiving. I watched her lay there for nearly a minute. She was fucked up. I considered going back to help her but just waited until she finally got up crying and started limping off, walking her bike in a half-crouch cradling one arm on the bars. I think she broke her elbow and/or collarbone.
