Switch to Linux now

Switch to Linux now, not at some indeterminate point in the future, now.
This is highly political because we live our lives on computers, and with Microsoft you are giving up everything to a company that hates you. You do not own your computer, Bill Gates does. He decides what you can do with it, he knows everything you do on it. Why? There is no reason for it. I put off switching for years because I thought it was """hard""" or something. It isn't, you just install it and use it. Do it now.

>Back up the files you need to keep on an external HD
>Download Linux Mint from here. Get another distro if you want, but if you don't know then just get Mint
https://linuxmint.com/download.php
>If your computer in ancient choose Mate, otherwise choose Cinnamon
>Download Etcher or Rufus to flash to a USB stick
>Restart your computer and follow the extremely basic instructions that even a retard could follow
>ERASE WINDOWS, DO NOT DUAL BOOT. YOU WILL NOT NEED WINDOWS AGAIN

That's the whole thing, so just do it. Watch this video if you need extra help: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2mUI3CMjmMc

FAQs:
>Isn't it hard and you need to be a hacker?
No
>But I need to play muh gameys
Grow up faggot, but anyway you can still play them
>I need to use some program which is windows only
You almost definitely don't, but even still it's barely any more effort to run it in WINE on Linux
>Linux is free if your time is worthless heh heh
It literally saves you time, it is easier to deal with than Windows. It will not cost you any time if you run something simple like Mint, you only get into autistic shit with certain distros.

OK that's all, so do it.

Got questions about GNU/Linux minimalism or want to share your journey? Jump in! Everyone is welcome here, no matter your experience level.

Bloatware slows things down, creates security issues, and makes software harder to use by piling on features most people don’t need. Minimalist software, on the other hand, keeps things simple and efficient β€” it respects your time and doesn't waste your device’s resources.

Basically, your government can't run on Linux, and it sure as hell won't run on Mac.

Windows based programmers and hacktivists still use Windows and understand that flow of data.

You can also encrypt your Windows if you're worried about security.

A few day ago I checked this and it seems that there are still no drivers for Mint or Linux generally, for example you need to fight 2 hours with your computer to make it to take screenshots. Mouse doesn't work, sound doesn't work, nothing works. "B-but it's freedom, you can install whatever drivers you want!" Well I don't want to install drivers, I want a computer which works. You have had decades to solve this and still your precious open source shit fails in the only task which is actually important for its users, to make a computer work effortlessly.

I mained linux for like 6 months. Nothing works on it. Everything is a struggle to do even the most basic things. Random shit will break constantly and you have to restart the computer. Things as simple as the right click popup window not dissapearing. How did they manage to fuck this up? I had a linux using friend that spent like 6 hours just trying to set discord up so he could share his screen.

This was debian if you are wondering.

Crazy, because I just pushed the PrtSc button on my keyboard and this happened. I never had to set anything up to do this, it worked by default. Same with drivers, I never installed any drivers manually, I just plugged my shit in and it worked.

I don't even know why people say shit like this, I have never come into any issues at all like this. As I said in the OP, different distros are very different. Some you need to set up a lot of things manually, but that's the entire point of them. Mint in particular is made to just work out of the box for people who are used to windows and maybe not that smart or good with tech, like yourself.

Weird that you would have such a strong opinion without ever actually trying it.

There are people who can barely use windows. Using computers is a chore for some people. Linux is a type of operating system where learning is required to use it. Its that way by design and why its so functional and great and secure. They just simply aren't going to care enough to want to reap the advantages of Linux. If something goes wrong they want to take it to someone who can fix it. Or call support or whatever.

The problem with all the Linux faggots is that they forget to tell you that changing OS means changing mindset.

All your windows shortcuts and commands are copied over in strange ways, You can't get around the fact that a user still has to learn to unmount and then remove a drive instead of just removing a drive on windows.

Lots of small issues that cause long term problems because they forget to also tell people that you need to learn to Script for Linux to really make it worthwhile.

>Random shit will break constantly and you have to restart the computer.
This is the core difference between linux and windows. When linux is broken it stays broken until you fix it. There is kind of a requirement to learn how to configure it correctly. Its stable on literally 99.99% of hardware. Windows tends to have these ephemeral problems that are just the result of bad design and coding. With windows rebooting is the solution. Which is a very strange problem to have. With linux rebooting is never the solution. Because you have some kind of configuration issue.

There is your problem right there. If you really want to use linux you should do linuxfromscratch.org. I know it seems like a lot to go through for an operating system but by the time you are finished with it you will be smart enough to run linux and you will have a machine that will have an uptime of years. I ran my home machine on one of those for 5 years without a reboot. And one day I made a mistake as root on the command line and deleted the entire hard disk. The operating system was still running and all the programs I had previously opened were still running. Including the network. I had a working web browser. Out of curiosity I left it alone just to see if it would crash. After 2 weeks I finally just gave up and pulled the plug.

>What is the problem with end of support? What do you need support for?
Since it's not open source, eventually there will be an exploit that is discovered and never fixed. Also, with end of support, even your virus definitions won't be updated.
In open source projects vulnerabilities are usually found and fixed (by somebody) in the first few months of public release (or even before).
There was that one vulnerability found in a Linux module (or pak or whatever) and it was traced back to a glow nigger coder. That was just because people were getting too lazy and not checking each other's work.
This is also why they are so keen to put back doors at the hardware level now. Eventually open source fixes these problems (except all your drivers).

Yeah they are doing it at the hardware level now. Apple succeeded in doing it for their hardware already. They basically track everything you do inside of applications... and then bundle up the data and post it to some apple cloud server. Apple products are kinda fucked. They can basically brick your entire machine if they wanted to. With a click of a button. Its dependent on their global email identifier. Which if gets hacked then your machine is bricked. Its pretty crazy.

Windows is convenient to the point where, barring system configuration bullshit that i almost never have any reason to do, I've never had to do anything beyond downloading and then running any program i want. I don't think you understand why systemd is popular or what it does. Systemd is what makes Linux usable for most people, why it is "hassle free" for normies. SystemD is the reason why OP made this thread.
And why MacOS and Windows are considered "hassle free" OSs for a long time. They had systemd like process managers in their operating system since forever.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux is good.
Developer version is free and all you need.
Also has some GREAT security features wired in: SELinux, firewalls, auditd, openSCAP.
Traditional Linux permissions let you set which user/group can read/write/execute. SELinux fine grains it further by not only setting WHO has access to files & processes, but WHAT they’re allowed to do with them.
Eg the Apache web server system user could be allowed to serve content but not read configurations.
Do it. You won’t look back.

Bro it is so weird for me seeing some of the shit people say. I have only ever used Mint because it worked without hassle and I saw no reason to change, I understand other distros are more complicated but like just don't use them? If you can't use them then they aren't for you.

I had all sorts of hardware and software issues on windows, never on Linux. I think it's a big problem that 'Linux' is such a catch-all, so everything built on the kernel gets lumped in as being the same thing. OK so obviously a low functioning person or a tech-illiterate boomer shouldn't try to use Arch. Most of the stuff people complain about hasn't been a problem for 10 years. I can't tell who is a shill and who is a retard and who has legitimate but irrelevant grievances and who has legitimate grievances that I just didn't happen to come across.

Very confusing. All I can say from my experience is that if you can use a computer at all in any capacity, you can use Linux (Mint at least).

xxx: OK, so, our build engineer has left for another company. The dude was literally living inside the terminal. You know, that type of a guy who loves Vim, creates diagrams in Dot and writes wiki-posts in Markdown... If something - anything - requires more than 90 seconds of his time, he writes a script to automate that.

xxx: So we're sitting here, looking through his, uhm, "legacy"

xxx: You're gonna love this

xxx: smack-my-bitch-up.sh - sends a text message "late at work" to his wife (apparently). Automatically picks reasons from an array of strings, randomly. Runs inside a cron-job. The job fires if there are active SSH-sessions on the server after 9pm with his login.

xxx: kumar-asshole.sh - scans the inbox for emails from "Kumar" (a DBA at our clients). Looks for keywords like "help", "trouble", "sorry" etc. If keywords are found - the script SSHes into the clients server and rolls back the staging database to the latest backup. Then sends a reply "no worries mate, be careful next time".

xxx: hangover.sh - another cron-job that is set to specific dates. Sends automated emails like "not feeling well/gonna work from home" etc. Adds a random "reason" from another predefined array of strings. Fires if there are no interactive sessions on the server at 8:45am.

xxx: (and the oscar goes to) fuckingcoffee.sh - this one waits exactly 17 seconds (!), then opens an SSH session to our coffee-machine (we had no frikin idea the coffee machine is on the network, runs linux and has SSHD up and running) and sends some weird gibberish to it. Looks binary. Turns out this thing starts brewing a mid-sized half-caf latte and waits another 24 (!) seconds before pouring it into a cup. The timing is exactly how long it takes to walk to the machine from the dudes desk.

I remember browsing the web (real web, not wap), while listening to mp3 (with a third party codec) with 1MB ram. Installing python, and image editing programs etc back in circa 2004.

Then they just decided to remove everything that made symbian good, for some reason.

Just give me two or three actual reasons why I should switch, instead of the usual schizo babble.
I tried Mint for about two hours. I stopped the first time I had to interact with "the console". It's not fucking 1990 anymore. I plan on switching to Linux but so far it's rather annoying than beneficial. My main question is - how would I (or any other user) benefit really? What's my threat assessment? My main concerns are as follows:
>some "hacktivist" tranny hacks 4chan and manages to leak all my posts along with my real name to people who know me in real life
Linux cannot protect me against this in any way.
>I unknowingly write something that activates the wrongthink department and I get jailtime and/or my whole life turned over because of a single ironic internet post
Linux cannot protect me against this in any way.

So how exactly is Linux beneficial to the average user like me? I already get the most obvious benefits, like no need for an anti virus software and the endless customization options. But so far, that's about it.

I’d just like to interject for a moment. What you’re refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Linux, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called Linux distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux!

There's certain stuff that just doesn't work that well on Linux. I'm a computer autist and programmer and I greatly prefer Linux overall. To get around my inability to run certain programs I was accustomed to, I set up GPU passthrough on Linux, so that I can boot up a Windows virtual machine that gets a whole monitor and dedicated GPU to itself.
It runs exactly like native Windows, but it's actually just being emulated inside of Linux. I've run everything in there. I don't play games that often, but stuff I've run in it ranges from Photoshop to Steam to Fortnite to TF2 to Project Zomboid etc. everything works exactly the same as it does on native windows. I really like this setup and don't think I can ever go back now. The downside to this approach is that it requires strong hardware. You need lots of RAM and a dedicated GPU for your Windows. But that's not a problem for me.
Honestly, I get why people who aren't autistic about computers just really don't want to bother with any of this stuff. There's a learning curve and it's not ever going to be as normie-friendly as Windows or MacOS. But I prefer the setup I have now over the basic bitch Windows setup I had before.

People will recommend dualboot, but that sucks because windows tends to override and fuck with the linux boot.
What you need to do is install a bootloader to BOTH drives (disconnecting the hard drives helps with this but is not necessary) and then you can switch between the two bootloaders in BIOS boot priority settings.

This is the only way you can keep windows from fucking with the bootloader.

Linux can do YouTube and MS Word, so there's no reason not to migrate.

I find this games argument strange. After all, windows games ironically are not very compatible with windows. If I want to run something like fallout 3 or new Vegas on windows I gave to tinker quite a lot to get it working and some games won't work at all. Since steam on Linux runs a compatibility layer to run windows games. All those old games work with basically no tinkering. We live in a bizarre world now that overall Linux can run more games then Windows because windows refuses to be compatible with itself.

Steam on Linux just works, with the exception of some games, mainly multiplayer with anti-cheat.
Other games can be installed via Wine wrappers, which is a little more technical, but well within the reach of the non-expert like me.

Maybe some games aren't available on Linux. So stop playing those games and play games that do work. Migrating to Linux is about maturity in the face of increasing risk from information technology. You will have to make some sacrifices.

However, that sacrifice isn't that great. Most games work on Linux these days.

> sacrifice convenience
Linux is very convenient once you get the hang of it. In many ways, it is more convenient. The terminal, if you take the time to learn it, is more efficient than GUI for some tasks. The GUI itself is as convenient as Windows, if not more so. Windows puts lots of junk in and takes a lot of functionality out. The Linux desktop is a good middle ground.
I think if you put in a month of casual Linux use and you'll find that it's as convenient as Windows.

Photoshop is one of those apps that keeps people locked into Windows. Gimp is a pale imitator, that's true.

However, Adobe is getting worse and worse. I run Photoshop pirated, and the most recent versions don't come with filters! You have to access the network to get them. That's why I run an old copy of Photoshop 7.0 in Linux. It does everything I need it to do.

Speaking of content creation, you can replace Adobe Premiere and After Effects with Davinci Resolve, which works on Linux.

Oh, god.
I definitely remember my first LINUX experience.
the free CD glued to the computer-shopper magazine
I remembr you had to answer hundreds of questions.
I was GUESSING at most of the answers, lol
took all weekend, but I learned to answer the questions, and get a boot.
I remember this, 3-d cube on the screen? It rotated, to take you to different desktops.
This was just entertainment, to play with it.
It was a different time. I also remember, they would have "it has to fit on a floppy disk" contests. Guys started sending in little operating systems, on a FLOPPY.
I couldn't help but download one, it was cute.
a bloody finger, was the mouse pointer.
it was like, ghetto win 3.11? from scratch, on a floppy.
it had, some little browser, though!
I used this floppy OS, to check PCs. If it booted and ran? No hardware issues, just wipe the hard drive and reinstall windoze.
Next? I experienced "puppy linux" and the concept of running "live".
If you get a version of Puppy linux your laptop "likes"?
its great to have around, for that day windows refuses to work... you can still get online that day.
I wasn't even dual booting? Literally just a CD I left in the CD player.
if it was just random internet browsing? Puppy, why not.
Now, this was all just novelty, or playing.
I thnk it was WIn 10? I just couldn;t take it any more.
Tried LINUX MINT...
never a reason to go back.
The FEW old programs I need to run? I just VM run an old windoze install for those couple applications.

Linux tards constantly masturbate about how ignorant people are and how easy it is to install a million distros and drives and command lines and whatever bullshit to use a Photoshop clone.

Then people tell them to fuck off and then they wonder why no one uses Linux. They are fucking retarded.

Imagine if you went to the supermarket and when you asked the wagie for the meat section, he laughed at you instead of... just answering.

Linux tards are subhumans that take pride into wasting hours and hours in Linux and learning useless stuff because they think knowing that stuff makes them superior to other people (because they can't compete in any other field, so they waste time into autistic topics). I was right, it's all about ego. It's about making an "us vs them" with a field only an autist would waste time in.

Obviously you can't compete in real life, strength or money or something with real value, so you do sour grapes and pick a field no one cares about and judge people around that topic. Everything goes around that fragile masquerade.

You are not above other people for knowing Linux. They just don't want to waste a million hours with an OS because why would they? They have better things to do with their lives and they can just pick an OS that works and if they are worried about security, debloat it.

Debloating windows will always be a better option than using Linux. You will have less errors with a debloated windows than with a clean Linux.

Windows is literally a malware.
Having said that Windows can't read Linux's file system such as EXT4 or BTRFS for example. Yes, it is the fault of pajeetsoft for not including those file system on their malware.
So technically you have to tweak jeetwaredows a bit in order to make it detect those linux partitions.

But then again it knowingly fucks up the bootloader because it is a malware as I said above.

I think it was WIN10 that finaly chased me out the door.
Burglary, bought a new laptop.
came with windoze I think 10.
I'd set it NOT to update, without permission.
it would re-boot whenever th hell it felt like it
I lost shit, because of this bulshit.
After two weeks?
I ws a dedicated windows user, and I couldnt take it.
years of dual booting, and booting live linux...
gave me options.
I WIPED a brand mew two week old laptop hard drive?
ten years later, same MINT install just runs perfect.
try that with any windows OS setup.
