So I'm rereading Orwell's book 1984 and it’s hitting differently this time.
Back then it was big brother, now it's a culture that tells young white men they’re either dangerous, invisible or unwanted. So what happens? They retreat. Porn, camgirls, AI waifus, maybe a prostitute now and then if you've got the cash for it.
Is paying for sex the new rebellion? Is that degenerate, or is it the last honest act in a society built on sexual lies?

That's what happened to me. When I was young and Boomers rammed it down my throat as some sort of vital piece of work I thought it was good. When I re-read it as an adult I saw it as the pretentious over-rated mass marketed twaddle that it is.

It's interesting to see what parts you remember after ten years because those are the ones that connected to you most. You can also notice things you haven't in the first read, for example this part where Winston tells Julia this right before they fuck for the first time:

There is no "culture". There is no powerful society of giga-joos who attempt to disrupt your access to female holes. The world of today is much larger than any power trying to control it.

i always got the impression that he realized the terrible nature of his own worldview while writing that book. it was the last thing he did after all. theres no doubt that he spent his life as a proper card carrying little commie but the way he draws out the nature of communism makes me wonder what he really believed in the end.
