there is something i notice in political discourse that I cant quite put a name to, the closest i can come up with is "convenient morality".
the thing is I'm skeptical of there being an objective morality, because it seems way too much of a coincidence that almost everyone's moral compass happens through sheer happenstance not require any sacrifice from them or require any change from them. like their moral system certainly can incur a costs on others but rarely themselves. So to me it seems less that there is an objective morality and more that people want to be be "moral" as an abstract concept to gain some sort of emotional validation so they find an set of values that require the least amount of work and sacrifice for them to follow. For instance the people advocating for the homeless generally aren't the people that actually has to deal with them, the people advocating banning porn generally are either women or men who are not single or just lost their sex drive , people advocating more restrictions on gun ownership generally do not own guns themselves or live in safe areas and so on.
