My mom is an RN, she said a fellow RN she worked with woke up during neck surgery and it was the most terrifying thing shes ever experienced. She sued the hospital and everything but it took years of therapy for her to overcome the mental trauma and still work as a nurse.

The only time a patient wakes up is if you don't use enough. Anesthesiologists are paid so much because they are doing a VERY difficult job. They need to poison someone enough to make them unconscious, but not so much their heart stops completely and they die or get brain damage. It is a very delicate line where one mistake could mean a million dollar lawsuit. While they're obviously insured, if you're the doctor who killed a guy, your chance of continuing in that field is slim, so, much like professional athletes, they're paid a lot because their career could be short and they won't have many options after it ends.

But also, just to play into your larp, there is no functional difference between experiencing surgery while being unable to move and then forgetting about it, and just being unconscious. In both scenarios the surgery is done and in both the patient doesn't remember it in their final state.

I went under the knife a month back. I don't remember shit after they started pushing the go-to-sleep meds.
Woke up feeling fine. No memory of the procedure. Felt like the best sleep I ever had.
Not saying that some people don't experience issues like you posted, but it's the rare exception.

Unless I have heart or brain surgery I'll probably want to go eat something within 20mins but they will only let me out in the room to sit on a timer so they're not sued or something.
