By the late 90s, racism was largely behind us. Discrimination and misogyny were frowned upon or even shunned. Gender dysphoria was a known medical condition affecting less than 0.05% of the general population. And nobody had ever heard of this non-binary stuff.

Multicultural societies are always highly politicized. That's precisely why nobody wanted it and why no society becomes multicultural voluntarily. Ethnic/cultural/religious/etc unity makes it easier for people to cooperate in the absence of authority. If you erode this unity then you increase the amount of authority needed to maintain a given level of cooperativity. The society must therefore become more authoritarian and/or less cooperative in response.
