By the late 90s, racism was largely behind us. Discrimination and misogyny were frowned upon or even shunned. Gender dysphoria was a known medical condition affecting less than 0.05% of the general population. And nobody had ever heard of this non-binary stuff.

They went mask off well before that, of course (going nuts about 2016's Trump win being a huge contributor). I think it's once they finally got their marriage equality ruling, they looked for new ways to continue implying other groups were oppressed and broke down language and the social contract entirely. COVID accelerated that.

So no, now we know both parties have their own authoritarian leanings and we just have to hope that trust in the system breaks down to where people won't trust it.

Multicultural societies are always highly politicized. That's precisely why nobody wanted it and why no society becomes multicultural voluntarily. Ethnic/cultural/religious/etc unity makes it easier for people to cooperate in the absence of authority. If you erode this unity then you increase the amount of authority needed to maintain a given level of cooperativity. The society must therefore become more authoritarian and/or less cooperative in response.
