How the FUCK do YouTube have seemingly unlimited storage capacity to store oceans of videos? What is their plan for the future? Purge older videos that don't meet some new criteria? How can they sustain this gargantuan database under times of financial pressure, and under increasing volumes flooding in? Wouldn't a LOT of people be very upset at Google if they purged their catalog? Like, how can this continue and when will it end?

Well, Youtube technically never makes money.

I can see them doing that, but relative to everything else, I doubt videos from before 2010 take up that much space

Google owns it, it's like asking how the CCP can run and store Tiktok or Amazon runs Twitch. they probably have city sized quantum computer data centres under the Rocky Mountains. They are building a new Google data centre here and people say it's too big and messes up the scenery.

storage gets cheaper by the day. google undoubtedly has their own production lines. it's not just youtube, google hosts a majority of the internet. even "independently hosted" websites use google as their backbone.

They were talking about purging older videos after a certain number of years of inactivity from the account holder, but I'm not sure if they've gone through with it yet
